Her purpose is to highlight certain hesitancy as well as difficulties of linguists defining the nature of article and its functioning in French. From a diachronic perspective, the author discusses the process of grammaticalisation of the definite article on the basis of the Latin demonstrative. She tries to draw a parallel between linguistic reflections during the Classical period and the present time which show two opposing concepts of the article. The synchronic perspective enables the author to study the article from the point of view of a Slovak speaker and his/her apprehension of this linguistic phenomenon. Thus, she endorses the idea that the article can be defined in French by its triple function, pragmatic, stylistic and that of actualisation, which could contribute to a greater understanding of the place of article in French. L'auteur de la communication s'interroge sur le statut de l'article dans le système linguistique du français. Son propos montre une certaine hésitation ainsi que les difficultés des linguistes à définir la nature de l'article et son fonctionnement en français. Dans une perspective diachronique, l'auteur problématise le processus de grammaticalisation de l'article défini à partir du démonstratif latin et tente de mettre en parallèle la réflexion linguistique à l'époque classique et à l'époque contemporaine qui dévoilent deux perceptions opposées de l'article. La perspective synchronique permet à l'auteur d'étudier l'article à partir de l'appréhension de celui-ci par le locuteur slovaque. Ainsi, postule-t-elle l'idée que l'article peut se définir en français par sa triple fonction, à savoir la fonction d'actualisation, la fonction pragmatique et la fonction stylistique, ce qui pourrait ensuite contribuer à la présicion du statut de l'article en français.
