The question of the importance of the Quaker Society for social work ethics and the development of the welfare state might seem like a simple one. There are, after all, a number of Quakers who played an important role in the development of social work not only in Norway, but also internationally. There are also a number of important causes, like the question of peace, arbitration and temperance, were Quakers played an important role. The presence of Quakers in Norway is dated back to 1814, however the influence of Quakers date back long before that (Aarek, Weihe, in Stavrum; Weihe, 2014). Even if my main focus is the development before 1814 I will briefly look into both the influence that predates 1814 and the values of social work. The professional social work is seen as developed from the end of the 1800s and mostly after 1900. The welfare state gradually developed from about the same time-period; still the foundations of both professional social work and the welfare state are far older (Soydan, 1993; Weihe, 2004, 2008).
