Heideggera je pýtanie sa na zmysel bytia. Kde však začat', čo má byť východiskom pri kladení si danej otázky? Týmto východiskom môže byť len špecifické súcno, ktoré nielenže vie o svojom bytí a nejako mu rozumie, ale v jeho bytí mu práve o toto bytie ide. Takým súcnom je podľa M. Heideggera pobyt (Dasein), t. j. človek. Už samotný pojem pobyt vyjadruje určitú časovú ohraničenosť, konečnosť "Koniec" - smrť podstatným spôsobom určuje bytie Dasein. Dasein je "smerom k smrti", "ku smrti" (Sein zum Tode). Smrť teda nie je len momentom, ktorým sa život končí, ale je tým, čo život určuje počas jeho celého "priebehu". The key issue of Martin Heidegger's work "Being and Time" is the question of the sense of being. Nevertheless, where should be the starting point in attempting to answer the question? Only a specific entity, which knows about its own being and understands it in a certain way, and is concerned about the very being in its own being, can serve as the starting point. According to Martin Heidegger, "Being There" (Dasein), i. e. human person, is such an entity. The very term "Being There" expresses a certain definiteness and finiteness. "The end" - death - is the decisive factor in determining the being of Dasein. Dasein is "directed to death", "Being-toward-Death" (Sein-zum-Tode).
