It is common for people to speak several languages especially in border areas. Uruguay is a small, highly centralized country but still is neither linguistically nor culturally homogeneous. The Uruguayan-Brazilian border is a very important starting point for all Uruguayan linguists. The existence of the DPU (Portuguese dialects of Uruguay) or PU (Uruguayan Portuguese) raises many issues not only within the field of dialectology, sociolinguistics and ethno-linguistic but also of history and literature. The Portuñol as the variety is often called by the speakers themselves, or Brasilero, is part of the identity of the border society. Los estudios de las lenguas en contacto reflejan la realidad lingüística global de hoy. Es común que se relacionen personas que hablan diferentes idiomas especialmente en las zonas limítrofes, las fronteras entre países. El Uruguay es un país pequeño y fuertemente centralizado pero aun así no es ni lingüísticamente ni culturalmente homogéneo. La frontera uruguayo-brasileña es un punto de partida muy importante para todos los lingüistas uruguayos.
