A case study from the Slovak cultural/scientific area. The paper deals with the history of translation in the Slovak scientific/cultural area. It offers a brief history of the Slovak thinking about translation. Apart from significant personalities in this field (D. Ďurišin, E. Panovová, S. Lesňáková, Z. Hegedušová, P. Koprda, Ľ. Vajdová, V. Dubcová, J. Koška, 3. Truhlářová, M. Žitný, J. Jankovíč, M. Kusá, E. Maliti), scientific activities of university centres (Bratislava, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, Prešov) and the Slovak Academy of Sciences are mentioned. The author further focuses on the mutual relationship between foreign literature and receiving culture by asking and answering the following questions: How the reception of foreign literature creates/forms the receiving culture? How the receiving culture creates/forms the reception of foreign literature?
