Dawniej dzwoniło się przed śmiercią, w czasie konania, w czasie pogrzebu, a także pośmiertnie. Używano do tego specjalnych dzwonów i dzwonków. Wśród nich znajdowały się m.in. dzwony skazańców, dzwonki dla konających, a także dzwony i dzwonki cmentarne, umieszczone nawet przy konkretnych grobach. W referacie zawierającym materiał ikonograficzny, którego podstawę stanowiły poszukiwania żródłowe oraz badania terenowe, omówiono różne rodzaje dzwonów i dzwonków śmierci, z uwzględnieniem zwyczajów na Orawie, specjalnych dzwonków dla konających zawieszonych do dziś w kościołach Krakowa, dzwonków epidemicznych oraz motywu dzwonów śmierci w literaturze pięknej. Various kinds of bell ringing are associated with death, related in folk tales and in historical sources. Bell ringing was performed before the death, during the moribund, during funerals, and after the death. Special bells of various sizes were utilized for the purpose. Among these, one could list convicts' bells, bells for the dying, as well as graveyard bells, sometimes located at the particular graves. In this paper, containing iconographic material, based on source queries and field research, the different kinds of death bells are discussed with particular consideration for customs in Orawa, special bells for the dying in Krakow, and the death bells motive in belle letters, describing e. g. the "konaiczka" ringing in the miners' tradition.
