Following the heated debate about the demographic consequences of the Spanish conquest of the New World for the indigenous population we have seen how the supporters of opposing ideologies, shuffling figures to first view exact, can build a true parallel stories. The equally controversial issue of the Spanish Inquisition served to us as a starting point to see how to manipulate and misrepresent the arguments in the attempt to present a historical reality according to prefabricated ideological premises. En el caso concreto de la leyenda negra antiespañola hemos intentado demostrar las dificultades y obstáculos que tienen que superar los historiadores en la época postmoderna cuando quieren escribir sobre temas polémicos con cierta objetividad e imparcialidad. Siguiendo el debate acalorado acerca de las consecuencias demográficas de la conquista española del Nuevo Mundo para la población indígena hemos visto cómo los partidarios de ideologías opuestas, barajando cifras a primer vista exactas, pueden construir unas verdaderas historias paralelas. El tema igualmente polémico de la Inquisición española nos sirvió como punto de partida para ver cómo se manipulan y tergiversan los argumentos en el intento de presentar una realidad histórica de acuerdo con unas premisas ideológicas prefabricadas.
