    AnnotationIn creating the knowledge-based economy, a higher education system plays an important role. Education programmes should be designed to encourage students to continuously enhance their skills acquire new knowledge and qualifications, so - to continuing education. Political transformation which started in 1989, as well as the advancing European integration in the field of higher education, known as the Bologna Process, were the factors determining the creation of new conditions of the higher education system. Both the Bologna Process and the National Qualifications Framework are still a challenge for the Polish system of higher education. The paper aims to present the concept of lifelong learning and its importance in the development of both man and society. The paper presents the most important legal foundations, both Polish and European, governing the issue of continuing education. The history of lifelong learning in Poland and abroad is also presented, whose roots date back to ancient times, as well as the revival of lifelong learning and its role in the development of modern world economies. The importance of the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning, developed by the European Commission is particularly emphasized, as well as the implementation of the National Qualifications Framework, which plays a key role in Poland in implementing the concept of lifelong learning.
