$a V odbornej literatúre zmienku o sv. Krištofa jednoznačne a presvedčivo objasnená. Mimoriadnu popularitu ikonografie svätca a špecifický obrazový kult je možné vysvetliť nielen vierou v magický účinok obrazov. Obrazy svätca v koncentrovanej symbolickej podobe jasne deklarujú životné priority a rozhodnutia, ktoré podlá súvekých predstáv určovali posmrtný osud veriaceho. Dobovo identifikovateľné významy - nezištná pomoc blížnemu, sviatosť krstu a odolávanie sexuálnym pokušeniam - sa spolupodieľali na vytváraní posolstva s výrazným eschatologickým obsahom. Argumentácie ohľadom tzv. "dobrej smrti" vrcholia v stredoveku vo veľakrát pripomínaných vetách sv. Augustína (354 - 430): "Zlá smrť nie je tá, ktorá ukončí dobrý život" a "Kto žil dobre, nemôže zle zomrieť." Pre stredovekých divákov predstavovali obrazy svätca pripomienku ideálneho kresťanského života a vzor, ktorého nasledovanie podľa stredovekých predstáv podmieňovalo posmrtný osud každého jednotlivca. 520 3-
$a The idea that medieval people believed that the Saint's depictions were able to protect them against sudden unexpected death (the so called bad death/mala mors) and misfortune is regularly mentioned in professional literature, and explains the popularity of his iconography as well as the implementation of monumental paintings at visually exposed places. The question why such exceptional effect on the audience was attributed to Saint Christopher's iconography in particular is not as straightforward in the literature as the statement about the medieval people's faith in the power of the Saint's depictions. Despite the attempts to explain the believers' relationship to the paintings, the cause of the image cult of Saint Christopher has not been definitely and convincingly clarified. The extraordinary popularity of the Saints iconography and the specific image cult can be explained not only by the magical effect of the paintings. The paintings of the Saint in a concentrated symbolical form clearly declare the life priorities and decisions, which according to contemporary ideas determined the believer's fate after death. Identifiable meanings depending on the period - selfless help to neighbours, the sacrament of baptism and resisting the sexual temptations - contributed to the creation of the message with a distinctive eschatological content. Argumentations regarding the so called "good death" culminate in the Middle Ages in St. Augustine's frequently reminded statements (354-430): "Bad death is not: the one that ends the good life" and "He who has lived well cannot die badly." The images of the Saint reminded the medieval audience of an ideal Christian life and represented an example, which, when followed, determined each individual's fate after: death according to medieval belief. 600 07
